initiated in 2017 by bilyana furnadzhieva, crystal sound project is a nomad. it combines sculptures in porcelain, electroacoustic music, multiple languages, cultures and genres.
in 2018, hélène nguyen thien dao, philanthropist, director of the nguyen thien dao fund and patron of crystal sound project describes it as one that “reunites the civilizations”.
this eponymous debut album released in 2018 formed the foundations of the project’s artistic direction — one of concept albums. in crystal sound all the sonic material is coming from the porcelain sculptures. it is either acoustically produced or sampled and manipulated in various ways.
since its debuts, bilyana furnadzhieva and viktor benev formed the core of the pluridisciplinary project with collaborative thinking in mind and have worked with an important number of international artists and technicians.
this album is the result of a long-term collaboration with the finnish singer and songwriter selma savolainen who was invited to experiment singing in one of the singing drums in order to search for ways of interacting with the frequency response of the sculpture and consequently alter her voice's properties. it incorporates her original lyrics and two traditional finnish songs in authentic arrangements.
crystal sound also features the renowned french double bass player jean paul celea on the track "cassiopeia" (written by benev especially for him). celea is known for his work in ensemble "accroche note", "ensemble musique vivante" and "ensemble intercontemporain". involved in the "free jazz" movement, he has produced a number of albums with original music.
crystal sound was recorded in studio boxson, paris by the french "victoire de la musique" winner (french grammy) philippe teissier du cros.
